Todd is a historic community that lies on the outer border of Ashe County and Watauga Counties. Originally it was called Elk Cross Roads and several businesses and homes were settled in Todd around the 1830’s when the Carolina-Virginia Railway decided to create a stop in between West Jefferson and the other points that were already established. Todd NC was part of a population and economic boom in the county for more than 50 years. After the railroad closed many workers left and the population declined. Fleetwood is a small area that is located right along the banks of The New River and Hwy 221. If you travel to or from Boone you will more than likely go through Fleetwood.
