Steve Murphree
After graduating from Auburn University (BS and MBA) I went to work for IBM in computer sales and marketing. After four moves Pat and I found ourselves in Greenville, NC, where I was Manager of the local IBM office for twelve years. In 1993 I took an early retirement from IBM and with two partners started an IBM Business Partner firm. In 2005 we sold our firm and became employees with a larger firm from which I retired from in 2008.
During the time Pat and I were beginning to discuss an eventual retirement from the Information Technology industry, we decided that we would become part of a new community where we would spend the rest of our lives. We both enjoyed the mountains and began coming to Ashe County some years before we actually decided to move here. Each time we came up, we were more and more captivated by the beauty of the mountains in a rural setting, and the honest friendliness and unique culture of the people in Ashe County.
In 2008 our opportunity came to move to the mountains. Our daughters had become gainfully employed: Lynn, who graduated from East Carolina University had a job with an electronic medical records firm in Raleigh, and Allison who had just graduated from Medical School began her surgery residency in Oklahoma City. Also, we had put our home on the market in December, 2007 and it sold in February, 2008. We moved up in August, 2008 and spent almost the first year entertaining family and friends who all of a sudden wanted to visit us.
Before leaving Greenville Pat and I had talked about working in real estate to use the experience we had gained to help others who would be coming up to live part time or full time. Pat had also gone through the process of getting her real estate license in 2007. We decided to become involved in real estate in 2009 in order to be more active in the community and to work with others coming to the mountains and make new lifelong friends.
In my free time, I enjoy skiing, hiking and traveling around the mountains of Ashe County where I continue to be amazed by the beauty of the different sights where ever I go.
If you are thinking about coming to the mountains, we would be happy to show you why Ashe County would be a great choice, and help you find answers to your questions about how to get here through our experience.
