Ashe County North Carolina was once part of a highly remote around of the Appalachian Mountains. Located near the North Carolina and Virginia state lines, the only routes to and out of Ashe County were main thoroughfares. Most of the rest of the roads were logging roads and old wagon pathways. The first settlers that lived here were hunters and they did not live the life of leisure that many of our residents get to enjoy today. It seems today that with each passing decade Ashe County grows less and less remote. Because the locals have staunchly protected and preserved the lands our county continues to grow in resources and economic potential, while maintaining our important natural land resources such as The New River and The Blue Ridge Parkway.
The Ashe County Airport was constructed in 1977 and serves small and medium sized aircraft. It is located 3 miles from Jefferson NC. From time to time, visitors and locals are invited to events in which the airport is opened to folks that might not know about it. The Ashe County NC Airport is open to the public.
In addition to the Ashe County NC Airport, travel is made easy to and from the county via several major highways including Hwy 16, 88, 163, and 221. The communities and towns of Todd North Carolina, Fleetwood, Lansing, Glendale Springs, Warrensville, Creston, Crumpler, Beaver Creek, Shatley Springs, Jefferson and West Jefferson have well maintained state and local roads. There are also various dirt secondary roads and private roads as well. One infamous route in Ashe County, Railroad Grade Road follows along the Virginia Creeper Railroad, which used to run through the county. The road is perfectly flat and runs near the New River in most spots making it ideal for biking and horseback riding.
